OSU Students Join Katrina Relief Effort

Feb. 26–COLUMBUS — A group of Ohio State University students, including Phil Recker, of Ottawa, recently returned from a trip to Louisiana to help cleanup and rebuilding efforts after Hurricane Katrina. Recker was one of 28 students in the Collegiate Young Farmers group working with Louisiana State University Ag-Center’s Hurricane Katrina Task Force to do the work. “One thing we hope that would come out of the relief effort is that students learn about the horrific devastation of Hurricane Katrina through the personal experience of being there,” said Dennis Hall, a Collegiate Young Farmers adviser and initial organizer of the trip. Tax team takes third ADA — Ohio Northern University’s National Tax Team won third place in the annual National Tax Moot Court competition earlier this month in St. Petersburg, Fla. The team included Jeffrey Garber, a second-year law student from Lima. Todd Kohlrieser, an ONU alumnus and practicing attorney in Lima, served as one of the team coaches. The Moot Court Program at ONU gives students participation in appellate and trial advocacy competitions in which they compete against law students from across the country in verbal and writing skills. Shepherd throwing pizza in Dominican Republic KENTON — Michael Shepherd, owner of Michael Angelo’s Pizza, recently traveled to the Dominican Republic with his acrobatic pizza team, the World Pizza Champions. Dominican Republic pizza chain Pizzarelli brought the team to the country to perform acrobatic dough throwing demonstrations, Shepherd said. For two days, the team performed in cities, schools, on television and for Pizzarelli’s open house black tie grand opening. Lima schools staff representing district LIMA — Lima schools staff are representing the district well around the state. Lima West teacher Traci Schnipke has been elected as district director for Northwest Ohio for the Science Educational Council of Ohio. SECO is a nonprofit group of science educators focused on current and proposed methods of science instruction. Lima Senior High School of Multiple Intelligences small school leader Jeff McClellan and building coach Sue Siesel presented this past week at the 2006 Career-Technical and Adult Education Policy and Leadership Forum. They talked about starting a small school structure in a school district and spoke to more than 100 people from around the state.
