Bee Reporter Honored for Stories on Bishop
By The Sacramento Bee, Calif.
Mar. 4–SACRAMENTO – Bee staff writer Jennifer Garza has won the national Wilbur Award for religion coverage. Garza’s award is for “The Gift,” which appeared in The Bee during Christmas week.
The narrative stories focused on the life-and-death fight of Bishop William K. Weigand of the Catholic Diocese of Sacramento.
Weigand had terminal liver disease and was saved by a stranger, firefighter Dan Haverty of El Dorado Hills, who donated two-thirds of his liver to save the bishop. The Wilbur Award recognizes “excellence in the communication of religious issues, values and themes in the secular media.”
