Posted on: Tuesday, 7 March 2006, 18:00 CST

CHICAGO, March 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Clare Grehan, a Year 1 teacher at the British School of Chicago, was recognized as the 'Outstanding Educator' by the Ravenswood Community Council. The British School is located in the Ravenswood suburb of Chicago. The award was given by the Council at a Community Awards Evening on 28th February which was attended by community leaders, local politicians and heads of business. Dawn Amundson, grandparent of one of the 5- year-olds in Miss Grehan's class approached Head Teacher Mike Horton about the award and he fully supported the nomination. Ms. Amundson said that her family had been impressed with the nurturing environment that Miss Grehan creates in her classroom and by the individual connection that Miss Grehan has with each child. It is this connection that makes her more than just an educator for her pupils. Miss Grehan attended the awards ceremony with Mike and Kath Horton, Justine Bricheno and Liz Musson from the British School. "It was a real honor to even be nominated let alone win the award and I am very flattered and touched by the support of Ms. Amundson and Mr. Horton," said Ms. Grehan.

A graduate of Manchester Metropolitan University, Miss Grehan taught in England for five years before coming to Chicago's British School in 2004 where she teaches Year 1 and is a member of the management team. Miss Grehan's pupils know that she has high expectations of them in all aspects of school life. They respond to this, always eager to please and enjoy school life, and know they always have her support and encouragement. Miss Grehan also takes pride in her relationship with her pupils' parents. It is this personal touch that she shows towards her pupils and their families that sets her apart.
