Mar. 8--California State University, Sacramento, is one of seven campuses tapped to offer the system's first independent doctoral program next year.

The program in educational leadership is a major boost for the 405,000-student CSU system, which until now has been allowed to offer doctoral degrees only in partnership with University of California campuses or private institutions.

The degree program, scheduled to enroll its first students in the fall of 2007, is targeted at educators who lead or want to lead public school systems and community colleges.

"It's for the working professional," said Rosemary Papa, director of the new program at CSUS.

The six other CSU campuses that will offer the doctorate in educational leadership next year are Fresno, Fullerton, Long Beach, San Bernardino, San Diego and San Francisco.
