Putnam City Schools Honor Student Artists

Mar. 8–WARR ACRES — Putnam City School Board members Monday set the schedule for summer school classes and honored student artists.

Board members proclaimed March as Youth Arts Month. Student art will be on display in several locations in the metro area this month.

District spokesman Steve Lindley said school officials make art programs a priority.

“That’s one of the things that sets this district apart,” he said.

As part of Youth Arts Month, Harvest Hills Elementary School third-grader Sydnie Fleming donated a piece of her artwork for permanent display in the district.

Members also approved starting high school, middle school, elementary and other special summer school programs at the end of May and continuing through the summer. Lindley said dates for special education courses have not been set.

Students on a literacy plan, students from Title I schools, and special education students who qualify for extended school year services will not have to pay for classes. All other students must pay tuition to cover the cost of salaries and supplies.

In other business, the board approved the purchase of an iron fence for Putnam City Stadium from Superior Fence for $108,935.

The six-foot-tall fence will have points on top that should prevent people from climbing over, Lindley said. The stadium is now surrounded by a chain-link fence.

Lindley said administrators hope the fence will be finished before the start of the next school year.
