College Fair Invites Students With Disabilities

Lancaster-Lebanon Intermediate Unit 13 will sponsor the Lancaster County College Fair for students with disabilities on March 16. The event will be held from 8:45 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Millersville University's Student Memorial Building, 21 S. George St. While experiencing the excitement of the campus, students will have an opportunity to learn about post-secondary educational opportunities for students with disabilities. "Millersville University prides itself in ensuring excellence of service delivery to students with disabilities," said Sherlynn Bessick, director of learning services. "We are always privileged to share our expertise to assist others." Several colleges and social service agencies will be at the event to guide and support students on their pathway to higher education
. Participants will include Albright College, Cheyney University, Consolidated School of Business, Disability Empowerment Center, Edinboro University, Harrisburg Area Community College - Lancaster Campus, Millersville University, Pennsylvania College of Art and Design, Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology and the Young Adult Employment Enhancement Program - Goodwill. Academic and vocational counselors and administrators will discuss successful strategies for transitioning from high school to post-secondary education. They will cover relevant topics including: differences between high school and college; how to prepare for college; physical, emotional and learning disabilities and learning styles; and significance of self-knowledge and self-advocacy skills. The college fair will conclude with complementary lunch on campus, individual visits with agency and college representatives and a guided campus tour. Admission is free and restricted for students 12 and older. The college fair targets 11th- and 12th-grade students with disabilities seeking post-secondary education, educators of both regular and special education and parents with students in Lancaster and Lebanon counties.
