Mar. 11--KINGSTON -- Wyoming Seminary President Jere Packard said the school plans to build an artificial turf field for its lacrosse and field hockey teams and name it after longtime field hockey coach Karen Klassner.
Packard said the field will be located on property Seminary owns in the area of West Hoyt Street and Maple and Chestnut avenues.
He said Seminary has needed an additional field for years. "We're ready to catch up."
He said some donors contributing to the project have asked the school to make the field available for other groups' use.
"I think this will be a very good thing for the West Side."
Packard said construction should begin this spring and the field should be ready for the fall field hockey season.
The field hockey team practices on a natural turf field behind the gymnasium and plays on the natural turf football field at Nesbitt Stadium.
Packard said the team often plays on artificial turf fields during away matches and seminary decided it was time to build its own.
He said seminary has another lacrosse-field hockey field that is not conveniently located -- it is about four miles away in Wyoming.
Packard said the school is looking at fields elsewhere to determine what artificial turf manufacturer it will choose, but FieldTurf is a likely choice.
FieldTurf has been used on football fields in districts such as Crestwood and Dunmore.
He said the turf will cost about $500,000 and the school is calculating the project's total cost. "We have a significant percentage of the funds in hand."
The school also plans to erect a field house, lighting and a parking area for cars and buses.
Seminary is seeking zoning exceptions for the height of the chain link fence and the parking area.
A hearing is scheduled at the Kingston Municipal Building on Tuesday night.
Packard said the school wants an 8-foot fence instead of a 6-foot fence to protect neighbors.
He said an additional parking area for events will be better than street parking, which could inconvenience neighbors.
