Changes May Mean Fewer Student Transfers: New Plan Would Keep Some Students at Midland

Posted on: Saturday, 11 March 2006, 06:01 CST

By Harry Franklin, Columbus Ledger-Enquirer, Ga.

Mar. 11--Fewer students attending Midland Academy than originally planned are expected to transfer to the new North Columbus Elementary School next fall, according to a plan Muscogee County School Superintendent John Phillips proposed Friday.

The attendance zones for Double Churches Elementary School and Midland Academy must be changed as the attendance zone for the new school is developed.

Under Phillips' proposal, students living in a section between Veterans Parkway and northeast of Moon Road will be allowed to remain at Midland Academy. That area includes Cooper Creek Road and Maple Ridge Subdivision.

That means about 125 children who were expected to leave Midland Academy to attend North Columbus Elementary next fall would remain at Midland, said Jennifer Allen, school district director of student services. About 150 would still move, if the school board approves the proposal.

"Parents didn't like the idea of their children possibly having to move twice," Allen said.

Elementary school attendance zones in north Columbus could change again next year, if a new elementary school is completed by the fall of 2007 near Shaw High School off Schomburg Road. Initially, it was expected to open in 2008, Phillips said at an attendance zone meeting at Northside High School this week. Some children living in fringe areas of the attendance zones could be asked to move to that new school.

The Muscogee County School Board may discuss the proposed attendance zones at its work session at 5 p.m. Monday. A decision on the proposed attendance zones could come at the March 20 school board meeting.
