Reading Eagle, Pa., Local Religion Digest Column: Couple to Describe Mission Program in Tanzania

Mar. 11--Larry and Diane Brubaker , who traveled to Tanzania last year with a group from St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Fleetwood, will present a program on the "Bulongwa, Tanzania Mission Program" on Monday at 7 p.m. at Bern Lutheran Church, 820 W. Leesport Road, Bern Township.

The group from St. Paul's helped unpack and distribute items that were sent to Tanzania in a sea container sponsored by the Northeastern Pennsylvania Synod of the Lutheran Church in America.

Hope Church, a United Methodist congregation in Douglassville, will hold a "Singspiration" service in lieu of its regular service tonight at 6. There will be no preached message but the service will include a variety of music, including vocal and instrumental performances from members and guests. There also will be prayer time.

The Singspiration service is held periodically. Regular services with preaching will be held Sunday at 8 and 10:30 a.m.

The Baha'is of Berks County will hold a discussion on "Baha'i Faith: New Religion or Renewal of Religion?" today at 7 p.m. at 350 S. Morwood Ave ., West Lawn.

Salem Evangelical and Reformed Church, formerly Salem UCC, 12 E. Church St., Reamstown, will hold an event called "Dancin' in the Streets" featuring the group Re-Creation at Reamstown Elementary School, South Main Street, Reamstown, today at 7:30 p.m. Suggested donation is $5 per adult and $2 for children ages 5-12.

Re-Creation also will present its sacred concert, "I Choose Joy," at the church at 9 a.m. on Sunday.

A Polish Mass will be held in the chapel at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, 12th and Spruce streets, on Sunday at 10:45 a.m.; refreshments afterward.

In addition, Gorzkie Zale, the plaintive lamentations of the Passion of Jesus Christ and the sorrows of his mother, will be held at 3 p.m. in the chapel each Sunday through April 9.

Other Sunday morning programs:

St. John's United Church of Christ, Whiteoak and Walnut streets, Kutztown: The Shanachians, a Celtic and British-Isles folk group from the Lehigh Valley, will perform at 10. The name of the group derives from the Irish "shanachie" or storyteller.

Mount Culmen Evangelical Congregational Church, 1885 Turkey Hill Road, Caernarvon Township, Lancaster County: The Eternal Praise Quartet , a gospel group from the Ephrata area, will perform at 10.

Christ Lutheran Church, 222 Niantic Road, Niantic, Montgomery County: The Rev. Richard Stevens , newly appointed interim pastor, will preach at 7:45 and 10:15 a.m. Stevens was a Philadelphia social worker prior to attending seminary and being ordained in 1977. Since 1987, he has served 19 parishes in the Southeastern Pennsylvania Synod as an intentional interim pastor.

He replaces the Rev. Paul Bartlett, who was feted last week on his last Sunday as pastor. Bartlett is serving as intentional interim pastor at a church in Lewisburg, Union County.

First Evangelical Congregational Church, Eighth and Court streets: Ken Sears , missionary from Russia, will be the speaker for Missionary Sunday during Sunday school at 9:30 and the worship service at 10:45.

Alsace Lutheran Church, 2201 Kutztown Road, Hyde Park: The Rev. Kevin Olson , youth ministries director for the Free Association of Lutheran Congregations, of AFLC, will speak at the 8:15 and 10:45 services. Alsace is a new member congregation of the AFLC.

A fine arts show and sale will be held Sunday from 1 to 6 p.m. at Immanuel United Church of Christ, 99 S. Waverly St., Shillington. There also will be a concert at 3 featuring the Choir of Lehigh Valley Charter High School for the Performing Arts.

Other Sunday afternoon and evening events:

St. John's (Hain's) United Church of Christ, 591 N. Church Road, Wernersville: Debra Ronning, pianist, will perform at 3 as part of the Annie M. Gaul concert series; offering.

Clinical psychologist David Stoop will present the Duane Moyer Lecture on Pastoral Care and Healing on Tuesday in the Dech Chapel at the Evangelical School of Theology, 121 S. College St., Myerstown.

His topic at 9:30 a.m. will be "What Makes a Christian Marriage Christian?" and his topic at 11 a.m. will be "Secrets of Great Marriages."

Stoop is founder and director of The Center for Family Therapy in Newport Beach, Calif., and also is an adjunct professor at Fuller Theological Seminary and an author.

The Salvation Army Women's Fellowship meets every Tuesday morning at 409 S. Reading Ave., Boyertown, from 10 until noon. The group meets for a time of fellowship with women 18 and older. There is a $1 donation.

Upcoming events include a visit on Tuesday to Chestnut Knoll, a Bible study on March 21 and a craft on March 28.

The Wilson Area Community Lenten services will continue on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at St. Alban's Episcopal Church, Wilshire Boulevard and Van Reed Road, Sinking Spring. The Rev. Kris Hayden , pastor of St. Peter's United Church of Christ, Wilshire, will preach on "Your Faith has Made you Whole.

Also on Wednesday, the North Lancaster Lutheran Lenten Cluster worship services will continue at Muddy Creek Lutheran at 7:30 p.m. The Rev. Sandra Gideon , pastor of St. Paul, Adamstown, will preach on "The Stone of a Contemptuous World."

Jon Stemkoski's Celebrant Singers , an internationallyknown Christian music group, will appear in concert on Friday at 7 p.m. at St. James Church, Seventh and Penn avenues, West Reading; offering.

Allentown Bishop Edward P. Cullen has announced he will lift for Friday, March 17, only the obligation of all Catholics to abstain from eating meat on Fridays during Lent.

The bishop granted the dispensation in view of the traditionally festive celebrations held on St. Patrick's Day, which falls on Friday this year.

The Berks District of the Evangelical Congregational Church will present a Walk Thru the Bible program, "Effective Parenting in a Defective World," on next Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Community Evangelical Congregational Church in Sinking Spring.

The cost is $15.

The Central Branch YMCA in Reading will hold a family fun event, "Spring Break at the Y," on March 26 from 2 to 5 p.m. Activities will include a prayer labyrinth, basketball, board games, volleyball and swimming.

The event is sponsored by the Y's Spiritual Emphasis Committee and all youth under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Church youth groups are welcome.

Belleman's Church, 3540 Belleman's Church Road, Centre Township, will hold a pot pie supper today, 3-6. Cost $6; $4 for ages 6 to 12 and free for those 5 and under.

Huff's Union Church, Hereford Township, will hold an oyster and Wixon shoofly pie sale, with orders due by March 26. Cost is $4.75 for oyster pies and $3 for shoofly pies.
