Thalia Wins Second Place in Reading Poster Contest

Cordova resident Thalia Garces, 9, was recently awarded second place in the Read Across America poster contest.
"I made my Read Across America poster to encourage kids to read," said the third-grade student at Dexter Elementary. "I had a great time making it because I love drawing and coloring."
The poster contest to promote Read Across America was open to all Shelby County school students. It served as a publicity tool and as a way to involve all students.
The requirements were to list the date, time and location of the Book Give Away and be linked to Dr. Seuss through student drawing, clip art or words.
Schools were provided with the packets of information in early January and needed to turn in the top three posters in each division in mid-February.
Poster divisions are K-2, 3-5, 6-8. 9-12.
The first-place winners and the sponsoring teacher received $25 cash prizes. The second- and third-place winners received movie pass coupon booklets.
