It's Always Been Such a Happy Place to Work

Posted on: Monday, 13 March 2006, 12:00 CST

AMONG the longer serving members of staff is deputy head Hilary Wankling.

She joined the school in 1978 and has been there ever since - apart from a career break to start a family.

While she has seen many changes, she believes the happy environment at the school has been a constant through her time there.

She said: "It's a very friendly happy school. There have been three different head teachers since I started here and each has brought a different flavour.

"One of the things that's changed is parents coming into the school. Now it's common practice for parents and grandparents to come in for assemblies on Wednesday and Fridays and to help in class or even talk to the class.

"At the moment we've got one class learning about the Second World War and we're hoping for a grandparent to come and talk. When I started parents didn't come in as much.

"There has also been all the other changes such as the national curriculum, the literacy hour, the numeracy hour and what we are seeing now which is an attempt to teach in a cross curricular way.

"I've also seen lots of changes to the building, particularly the new IT suite. When I came the school had no computers at all. Even the secretary had a typewriter rather than a computer.

"All the technology hasn't made teaching any easier as teachers have had to learn how to use it but it's certainly made it more interesting and broadened out the curriculum."
