Community, Staff Make Reading Celebration a Success

Celebration of Reading Day at Wells Elementary School took place on March 3.

Throughout the day, community members and school staff visited classrooms to read their favorite children’s books aloud.

A “Story Book Parade” led pupils from classrooms to a schoolwide assembly. The Wells Recreation Department drama group performed an excerpt from “The Wizard of Oz.” The assembly marked the end of the Blast from the Past reading incentive program.

Tory Ryden, a WMTW Channel 8 newscaster, was among the guest readers. A story about her visit to the school appeared on the station’s evening newscast.

Students from both the high school and junior high also read to the pupils. A group of 12 high school students also performed sketches based on several books, including “Where the Wild Things Are” by Maurice Sendak.

Celebration of Reading Day was organized by Community Resource coordinator Maryanne Foley and librarian Karen Westerberg. Many parent volunteers also helped with the event.

This year marked the eighth year the event has been held at the school.
