Postgraduate Study at Cardiff University

Posted on: Thursday, 23 March 2006, 15:00 CST

Located in the heart of the Welsh capital, Cardiff University is one of Britain's major teaching and research universities.

Home to some 25,000 students, including around 5,000 postgraduates, it was ranked 7th out of 106 UK universities in the most recent independent assessment of research quality.

Teaching in 21 subject areas has also been rated as 'excellent', the highest award available.

The university is vibrant and cosmopolitan, attracting students from more than 100 overseas countries, but it is also very much part of the local Cardiff community. Many of the citizens of Cardiff are already linked to the university, whether as alumni, members of the university's 5,000 staff body or through studying at Cardiff on undergraduate, postgraduate or lifelong learning programmes.

The university's breadth of expertise in research and research- led teaching encompasses the humanities, the natural, physical, life, health and social sciences, engineering and technology and preparation for a wide range of professions.

At postgraduate level, the university offers over 250 taught masters, diploma and certificate courses; research opportunities leading to an MPhil or PhD are available in all subject areas.

Cardiff School of Social Sciences and Cardiff School of Computer Science are two of 28 academic schools at Cardiff that offer a variety of postgraduate programmes. These are available on both a full-time and part-time basis.

CARDIFF SCHOOL OF SOCIAL SCIENCES

Cardiff School of Social Sciences enjoys an international reputation for excellence in research, having achieved a 5* rating in the 2001 Research Assessment Exercise for Education and a 5 rating for Sociology.

The school is also recognised as one of the top five centres for excellence in the UK. Around 300 students join the school each year to pursue postgraduate study in a range of social science disciplines. Much of our research involves collaboration with major universities and international agencies around the world.

It also involves us in local contacts with policy makers and practitioners. This creative combination of interests and practices is the hallmark of the school.

The School of Social Sciences offers nine different MSc and MA degree programmes, full and part-time research opportunities and a range of professional doctorates. Professional doctorates involve a significant proportion of teaching as well as a research thesis and are designed to develop the capabilities of individuals to work within a professional context.

In Cardiff School of Social Sciences we offer an integrated professional doctorate scheme within which education, health and social work professionals work together for some of the taught modules. This unique inter-professional learning allows students to reflect on both what is shared across professional boundaries and what is distinctive to their own occupational traditions.

The professional doctorate is a part-time programme usually taught in three-day blocks of intensive teaching with supervised home-based study.

CARDIFF SCHOOL OF COMPUTER SCIENCE

Cardiff School of Computer Science is one of the premier university schools of its type in the UK. It has an international reputation for both its research and teaching activities. In the 2001 Research Assessment Exercise, the school was awarded a grade 5A ranking, indicating research of international and national excellence and placing the school 12th out of 80 in the country based on the quality of its research.

Teaching in the school draws on the staff's research expertise and underpins its masters programmes.

At postgraduate taught level, two of the school's most popular courses are its MSc in Computing and MSc in Strategic Information Systems. The MSc in Computing is a tailor-made programme for non- computing graduates. It offers an opportunity for graduates to convert to a career in computing, improve their current job prospects or simply upskill and gain a formal qualification in computing.

The MSc accepts students from a wide range of backgrounds, including graduates from Europe and further afield, but it also attracts a significant number of students from the local area, many of whom want to study part-time.

In contrast, the MSc in Strategic Information Systems is specifically aimed at graduates and professionals with at least two years' relevant experience. Most students intend to go on to a senior position in industry, commerce or government.

Like the MSc in Computing, the MSc in Strategic Information Systems is available part-time as well as full-time, enabling students to dip in and out of the course to suit their professional commitments.
