Tuition, Fees to Rise 4.9 Percent for Out-of-State Undergrads

Mar. 23--Indiana University plans to increase tuition and mandatory fees for out-of-state undergraduates this fall by 4.9 percent -- the same rate at which costs will rise for Hoosier undergraduates.
Increases for IU Bloomington graduate and professional students will range from about 5 percent in some disciplines to 10 percent for law students.
IU trustees will conduct a forum to get input on the proposal at 3 p.m. April 5 in the Dogwood Room of the Indiana Memorial Union. They plan to approve tuition and fees April 7 at IU Southeast in New Albany.
Trustees voted in May 2005 to approve 4.9 percent tuition and fee increases for in-state undergraduates for 2005-06 and 2006-07. But they approved out-of-state, graduate and professional rates for 2005-06 only.
Tuition and mandatory fees for in-state undergraduates will total $7,460 in 2006-07. If the proposed increases are approved, out-of-state undergraduates will pay $20,464 in tuition and fees. Room, board and living expenses add about $10,000 to the cost of attending IU, according to estimates.
Paul Rowher, moderator of the Graduate and Professional Student Organization, said it's a relief that the proposed increases are modest, but students face other issues.
"The smaller rate increase, when compared to last year, demonstrates the value Indiana University places in graduate, professional and international students," he said. "It's a shame we can't get more support for parking and health care for our children."
Proposed increases for graduate and professional schools include:
--Business, 6.9 percent for Indiana residents and 6.7 percent for nonresidents.
--Law, 10 percent for residents and 6.7 percent for nonresidents.
--Library and information science, 7.2 percent for residents and 8 percent for nonresidents.
--Optometry, 8.8 percent for residents and 4.2 percent for nonresidents.
--Public and environmental affairs, 5.1 percent for residents and 4.7 percent for nonresidents.
--Other graduate programs, 5.4 percent for residents and 6.1 percent for nonresidents.
