World Education Forum opens in Brazil with focus on adult education
RIO DE JANEIRO, March 23 (Xinhua) -- Brazilian Education Minister Fernando Haddad opened the fourth World Education Forum here Thursday with discussions of adult education expected to dominate its agenda.
Under the rubric "Citizens' Education for an Educated City," the three-day event is scheduled to review a variety of educational programs, including Brazil's Factory School, which trained 12,000 students in 2005, and distance learning projects; Cuba's People's Educators Movement; and Venezuela's Educational Missions, which include sports, culture and health projects.
Some 15,000 representatives from more than 100 nations and non- governmental organizations attended the annual event.
The World Education Forum is part of the World Social Forum, which was launched in 2001 and held three sessions in Port Alegre, capital of the Rio Grande del Sur state, before moving to Sao Paulo in 2004.
Organizers said they chose to Nova Iguanu near Rio de Janeiro as the venue for the current forum to highlight Rio's urban violence and the efforts to control it.
