Mar. 24--An East Leyden High School teacher was charged Thursday with sexually assaulting a 17-year-old female student, police said.
McQueen "Basil" Duncantell, 28, was arrested in his Woodridge home Wednesday night after the student told a friend of repeated sexual encounters she had with him after school, said Franklin Park Deputy Police Chief Jack Krecker.
The friend told another person, who told a school administrator, who then reported the teacher to a Franklin Park police school-resource officer, he said.
By 7 p.m. Wednesday evening, police had taken Duncantell, a first-year social studies teacher, into custody, Krecker said. Duncantell confessed to police that he had sexual encounters with the student, he said.
Duncantell was charged with criminal sexual assault because he is a teacher in a position of authority over the student, Krecker said.
Duncantell also is a freshman boys basketball coach at the school, according to Krecker and the school's Web site. East Leyden was his first job after graduating from the University of Illinois, Krecker said.
The alleged sexual assaults occurred in a classroom after school when the teacher and student were alone, Krecker said. Police believe the girl was assaulted four or five times between January and the end of February, he said.
Duncantell is being held in the Franklin Park Police Department and will appear in Maybrook Court Friday for a bond hearing, Krecker said.
School officials could not be reached for comment.
