State to Cut Checks for Two Schools

Mar. 27--The Antioch school district will receive state funding to build two new schools that district officials believe will help alleviate overcrowding.

The State Allocation Board approved Wednesday funding the proposed $20 million magnet high school and an $18 million elementary school to be built in Oakley. The magnet school, which will have a medical focus, will house more than 700 students. The Oakley school will house a little less than 550.

"We're looking forward to providing the facilities that our students and community needs," said Sheri Gamba, chief business official for Antioch schools.

The bidding process to build the Oakley school will begin immediately, Gamba said, adding that the district hopes to break ground this summer. The school is scheduled to open in the fall of the 2007.

The magnet high school will break ground in the spring or summer of 2007, to open in 2008. The search for the school's principal, however, has already begun.

School Board President Bart Sandborn said the district will be able to serve many more students and "give kids a lot more opportunities."

The district is also completing the bidding process for site work, such as grading and compacting, and construction on several modernization projects. The board approved bids for projects at several elementary schools at last week's board meeting.

Board members also approved modernization bids for Live Oak High School and new buildings for the Antioch Charter School, which is slated to open in the fall.
