The relationship-based education programs at Austin Can! Academy has been highlighted in the recently published report, Whatever It Takes: How Twelve Communities Are Reconnecting Out-of-School Youth, by the American Youth Policy Forum in Washington, D.C.
The report provides statistics on the serious high school dropout problem in the U.S. and provides in-depth descriptions of 12 programs that are successfully reconnecting dropouts to education and employment training. Austin Can! was highlighted for its ability to help turn around the lives of young people who believed dropping out of school was their only option.
Whatever It Takes outlines the history of Texans Can! and describes the relationship-based education philosophy upon which the organization was built. Readers will discover how small classes, flexible scheduling, counseling and celebrating student accomplishments are just as important at Austin Can! as the curriculum.
An excerpt from the report quotes Grand East, founder of Texans Can! "We found that dropouts did not have appreciably more learning disabilities. Rather we found the common thread in these students was the chaos and dysfunction in their personal lives."
Austin Can!, as do all Texans Can! Academies, aims to deal aggressively with a student's personal issues through intensive counseling and raise the students' expectations they have for themselves.
