Board to Adopt Redistricting Plan for Middle Schools

March 29, 2006

By KATIE MULVANEY Journal Staff Writer

SOUTH KINGSTOWN – The School Committee aims to adopt a plan to redistrict the middle schools at its meeting tonight at South Kingstown High School.

Supt. Robert Hicks is recommending that students from West Kingston and Matunuck Elementary Schools attend Curtis Corner Middle School, while students from Wakefield Elementary would head to Broad Rock. Peace Dale School students would divide between the two middle schools, with 84 percent going to Broad Rock.

The recommendation — which is the result of four public workshops — would require a total of 181 seventh and eighth graders to change middle schools, 96 from Curtis Corner and 85 from Broad Rock.

Hicks, in conjunction with Dattco, the bus company, has also developed a proposal to allow “grandfathered” students to remain at the middle school they had been attending. The plan involves shuttling grandfathered students between middle schools, where they would transfer to another bus for their ride home. In the morning they would change buses at the high school. It would require a five- minute adjustment in the high school start and end times.

The transportation and redistricting plans are detailed, along with maps, at the district Web site: www.skschools.net.
