Mar. 31--An Iowa professor known nationally for his work using financial markets to forecast elections will be the next dean of the University of South Florida's College of Business Administration.
Robert Forsythe, 56, will take over July 1 from Robert Anderson, who is retiring, USF said Thursday.
Forsythe is senior associate dean and holds the Leonard A. Hadley Chair in Leadership at the University of Iowa's Henry B. Tippie College of Business, where he is a former chairman of the economics department.
Best known for his work as co-founder of the Iowa Electronics Market, Forsythe developed a program for trading futures contracts in world events. Traders in past markets placed bets by buying or selling contracts based on their predictions for presidential elections, Federal Reserve interest rate hikes, stock price movements and influenza outbreaks. Last year the Iowa market collaborated with the University of Miami on a hurricane futures market in which traders attempted to predict where storms would make landfall.
"Dr. Forsythe is a dynamic and creative individual who recognizes the driving force business plays in our society," USF provost Renu Khator said. She praised his experience and strong technology background.
Forsythe has a bachelor's degree in quantitative business analysis from Pennsylvania State University and master's degrees in economics and statistics and a doctorate in economics from Carnegie Mellon University.
