Four New Orleans-area students were among the state's 2006 Student of the Year finalists named today by the state Department of Education.
The winner will be announced at an awards ceremony at 6 p.m. April 19 in Baton Rouge.Johlee Elizabeth Schinetsky, an eighth- grader at Archbishop Chapelle High School in New Orleans; Caitlyn Aerial Clarke, a senior at Grace King Senior High School in Jefferson Parish; Zachary David Wells, a senior at Pearl River High School in St. Tammany Parish; and Taylor Jacob Atkinson, an eighth- grader at John L. Ory Communication Arts Magnet School in St. John the Baptist Parish, are the local finalists.
Schools nominate students of the year at the three grade levels. Students progress through district and regional competitions. Finalists are chosen based on superior academic achievement, leadership, character and service to schools and communities. Regional selection committees evaluate candidate accomplishments, written compositions and oral reviews to judge communication and thinking skills.
Every year I am impressed with the achievements and accomplishments of the students who compete for these honors, said state Superintendent of Education Cecil Picard. These students prove yet again that Louisiana's schools are effectively educating Louisiana's youth. I am very proud of each of the students who competed at every level. They represent a bright future in Louisiana.
