Apr. 8--NORFOLK -- Old Dominion University will raise tuition and fees for in-state undergraduates nearly 9 percent, beginning with the summer session.
ODU's Board of Visitors on Friday approved increasing the annual amount by 8.6 percent, from $5,614 to $6,098.
Robert Fenning , the vice president for administration and finance, said that falls in line with ODU's prediction, in financial plans submitted to the state, of an 8 percent tuition increase, assuming that state financing to the school also goes up. "We're doing what we said we would do," Fenning said.
The extra money will help finance, among other items, new faculty positions, expansion at the satellite centers, more financial aid and improvements in the campus police and student recruitment.
Non academic fees will go up 10 percent, partly to field a new football team, which is scheduled to begin playing in 2009 , and to revamp the recreation center, Fenning said.
Including room and board, the total package for an in-state undergraduate will rise 7 percent, from $11,491 a year to $12,298 .
ODU officials noted that Virginia Tech recently approved a bigger tuition-and-fee increase -- 9.3 percent.
Most large public universities in the state have yet to set their rates.
Locally, tuition and fees will go up 8.3 percent at Norfolk State University and nearly 6 percent at Tidewater Community College.
