Apr. 12--The Coolidge Unified School District received state approval to build its second high school.

The 1,200-student high school is expected to open in fall 2008 at Gary and Silverdale roads.

The State Facilities Board, which approves funding for new school construction, awarded the district $23 million to build the school at its regular meeting Thursday. The district will use $10 million from voter-approved bond proceeds that was set aside for the new high school construction.

Walter "Skip" Brown, the district's executive director of construction and planning, said the current high school has enough classroom space to accommodate growth until the new school opens.

"We want to make sure when those kids show up we don't say 'Sorry, we're full,' " he said.

The Higley Unified School District also received the board's go-ahead to construct a kindergarten- through eighth-grade school for 1,025 students to open in fall 2008. The state also awarded the district $6 million to purchase 22 acres near Recker Road and the future extension of Loop 202.

The Queen Creek Unified School District was awarded $6 million to purchase 34 acres near Riggs and Sossaman roads for a future middle school.
