California Charter Schools Celebrate National Charter Schools Week: May 1-6, 2006
Posted on: Monday, 1 May 2006, 15:00 CDT
Thousands of teachers, students, parents and charter school leaders in California are celebrating the seventh annual National Charter Schools Week, May 1-6, with several events planned throughout the state.
This week of celebration comes at a time when education reform has taken center stage on a national and local level, with charter schools leading the way. In 2005, a record 84 public charter schools opened their doors for the first time in California -- the largest number of charter schools to open in one year since 1999.
"California's charter schools continue to be at the forefront of successful public education reform; many of the state's highest-performing public schools are charter public schools," said Caprice Young, president and CEO of the California Charter Schools Association. "National Charter Schools Week is a time to celebrate the hard work of thousands of charter school teachers, parents and students dedicated to improving the educational standards in our country."
The California Charter Schools Association, which represents the majority of the state's 574 charter schools, is proud to participate in activities that offer greater public awareness about the high quality and innovative solutions offered by charter schools.
