Exclusive Private All-Girls High School Makes Debut in South Orange County

Posted on: Wednesday, 3 May 2006, 15:00 CDT

What teenage girl wouldn't want the opportunity to attend a high school that offers freedom of thinking, a curriculum that consists of fashion design, dance and science technology, and the option to explore their interests outside of the classroom? Silverleaf Academy of Arts and Sciences offers a modern approach to the traditional all-girl high school and will open its doors in the fall of 2006 in Mission Viejo.

Silverleaf Academy, an exclusive college preparatory school for girls in grades 9-12, offers an alternative to both public and private school education by offering an exceptional and extraordinary curriculum. In addition to covering the California Content Standards, Silverleaf Academy will offer fashion and graphic design, computer fine arts as well as traditional visual arts, and a science program equipped with a state-of-the-art lab. Another distinction about Silverleaf Academy is its sister affiliate, West Coast Dance Academy, which offers classes such as ballet, Pilates and hip hop.

"Our hands-on approach to learning and our excellent student-to-teacher ratio engages students and allows for experiencing academics through field trips and additional media that is not typically found in the public school system," said Nicole Eshelman, social science teacher of Silverleaf Academy.

Individualized instruction is of high importance at Silverleaf Academy, which maintains a maximum 10:1 student-to-teacher ratio. Because research shows that girls learn better and build more confidence in cooperative, single-gender learning groups, collaborative activities are emphasized at Silverleaf Academy.

In addition, Silverleaf Academy teachers are chosen for their varied backgrounds and flexibility, and many hold a master's degree in their field. "A special school requires special teachers. Though we've received thousands of applications, we have been extremely selective. We want only the finest teachers with exceptional skills and positive, nurturing attitudes," said Alexis Presley, assistant director of Silverleaf Academy.

Silverleaf Academy goes beyond the boundaries of traditional education, providing young women with a solid educational foundation and empowering them to do great things.
