May 5--HIGH POINT -- Queen Noor of Jordan will address High Point University graduates and their families Saturday during the 2006 commencement ceremonies.

Queen Noor joins a line of distinguished speakers offering remarks at HPU graduations. Former New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani spoke last year and Crystal Cathedral minister Robert A. Schuller Jr. delivered the baccalaureate address.

The Rev. Dr. James C. Howell, senior pastor of the 4,000-member Myers Park United Methodist Church in Charlotte, will speak at the HPU baccalaureate service on Friday at Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church. "Our students and their families deserve the best speakers, and our fine university deserves recognition from border to border and coast to coast and countries beyond our shores," said HPU President Nido Qubein.

The event, which attracts thousands of family members and alumni, is closed to the public.

Born Lisa Halaby, Queen Noor received a bachelor's degree in architecture and urban planning from Princeton University in 1974. After graduation, she worked on international urban planning and design projects in Jordan and several other countries. The late King Hussein and Queen Noor were married in June 1978.

Since then, she has become a leading voice for the understanding of Middle Eastern politics, Arab-Western relations and global issues. She chairs the King Hussein Foundation and she is president of the United World Colleges, a network of 10 equal-opportunity international colleges fostering cross-cultural understanding and global peace.

Howell's speech also will be closed to the public. Howell has preached on "The Protestant Hour" for two years and was honored with the Francis Asbury Award for his work mentoring college and seminar students. He is the author of 11 books and numerous scholarly and professional articles, preaching resources and book reviews.

In 2003 Howell served as the Jameson Jones Distinguished Lecturer in Preaching at Duke University Divinity School.
