May 11--Members of the Tulpehocken School District teachers union will demonstrate outside district schools this morning to call attention to the possibility that some classes may be dropped next year, a union spokesman said Wednesday.
The 140-member union, which has been working without a contract since June, held several informational demonstrations previously, but this will be the first to focus on academics, Brian C. Ferrence said.
It will take place before classes start outside all three school buildings, Ferrence said.
According to Ferrence, district plans to offer fewer classes are hampering contract negotiations.
"If we give them everything they want at the table, they can cut more teachers and spread the remaining staff ever thinner," said Ferrence, who does not take part in negotiations.
District officials have said the district does not plan to hold high school classes that attract fewer than 10 students, except advanced-placement classes.
The district also plans to drop high school industrial-arts classes, eighth-grade computer and geography courses and to allot less time for music and art programs in the middle school.
