May 11--YORK -- Mark Thomas Hendry, a Fort Mill educator, has been selected to serve as principal at York's Cotton Belt Elementary School.
"I'm looking forward to the opportunity," said Hendry, 38, who is assistant principal at Springfield Elementary School. "I'm excited about meeting the staff, students and parents and getting to work."
Hendry replaces Matt Brown, who has served as principal since Cotton Belt opened in 1998. Brown is the newly appointed assistant superintendent for operations and administrative services with the York school district. Hendry and Brown will start their new posts July 1.
Betty Johnson, York school board vice chairwoman, said Hendry is a good match for Cotton Belt.
"He has a personality that will fit in with the school," Johnson said. "He's a people person, and he enjoys working with children."
Hendry is no stranger to western York County. He lives in York with his wife, Kendra, and children, Hayden, 13, and Haley, 11.
A native of Lakeland, Fla., Hendry earned an associate's degree in education from Polk Community College in Florida. He earned a bachelor's degree in physical education from the University of South Florida in Tampa and a master's degree in educational leadership from Winthrop University.
During his 15 years in education, he's worked in several Florida schools and was a physical education/health teacher at Crowders Creek Elementary School in Clover.
While Hendry has served in his current post for four years, he is ready to move into his new position at Cotton Belt, home to 734 students.
"I'm looking forward to helping Cotton Belt continue to be a successful school," he said.
