Posted on: Friday, 12 May 2006, 09:07 CDT

CLEVELAND, May 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Cuyahoga Community College, Ohio's largest and oldest community college, will hold its 40th annual commencement ceremony on Thursday, May 18 at 6:30 p.m. in the Cleveland State University Wolstein Center. A total of 2,350 students have petitioned to graduate.

"The College is proud to be graduating such a large number of students and we are delighted that nine percent of those graduating will receive more than one associate degree. Receiving two degrees is a phenomenal accomplishment since many of our students are the first in their family to attend college," said Tri-C President Dr. Jerry Sue Thornton, who will preside over the commencement ceremonies.

The fall, spring and summer graduates will be receiving two-year associate degrees in arts, applied business, applied science, science and technical studies.

Connie Schultz, The Plain Dealer columnist and 2005 Pulitzer Prize winner for Commentary, will deliver the Commencement address. She has been one of Cleveland's best known and admired journalists and has won numerous awards for her work, which reflects "compassion, courage, humanity and a deep concern for the underdog." In April 2006, she published her first book, "Life Happens - And Other Unavoidable Truths." Presently, she is taking a leave from The Plain Dealer to accompany her husband, Sherrod Brown, on the election trail as he runs for U.S. Senate.

She graduated from Padua Franciscan High School in 1999, spent a few years at Bowling Green State University and then transferred her credits to Tri-C to obtain a two-year degree. "I came to Tri-C because I wanted to pursue a degree in Dental Hygiene and they offer a program with an excellent reputation in that industry," she said. Myatt resides in Parma and is engaged. She has two sons, four and two years of age. Her goal is to continue her education by taking distance- learning classes this summer through Youngstown State University as she begins to pursue her bachelor's of Science and Allied Science degree.

This year's faculty marshal is Assistant Professor of Philosophy Eleonore Adams. She has worked at Tri-C since 1977. Adams started her career as an adjunct professor; in 1989, she received a tenure track position. Her graduate degree is from Case Western Reserve University.
