Home-Schooled Grads: Students Thank Families for Their Education

May 14--GULFPORT -- Five home-schooled students came together with family and friends Saturday to celebrate the completion of their high school studies in a ceremony for members of the Coast Christian Home Educators Association.

The students welcomed a gathering of about 150 guests in the sanctuary of Michael Memorial Baptist Church for a commencement ceremony that included reflections from family and friends, music, and messages of encouragement and support.

Some of the five students had never met each other before graduation planning began, and their individual educational experiences varied widely.

One student's schooling took place in six different countries across three continents. Some of the students had been enrolled in public schools before home schooling, others had been taught at home from the start.

After Katrina, one student took an extended break from the classroom to help with volunteer recovery efforts; others resumed study as quickly as their families were able.

Though their experiences differed, when they addressed the audience at the ceremony each of the students expressed the same sentiment of thankfulness to their families for the sacrifices made to personally oversee their education.

"This day is not just a celebration of my achievements as a graduate, but the achievements of my family, because we all did this together," said Loren Blackmon.

The students were presented with their diplomas by their families, and then performed a musical selection, "El Shaddai" as a class, with Hannah Hill and Jessica Boyd singing, Loren Blackmon playing piano, and Max Hutchinson and Seth Campbell on guitar.
