Student Caught With Handgun: Sammy Nguyen, of Southeast High School, Brought .22-Caliber Weapon to Show People

May 19--MANATEE -- A Southeast High School student was arrested on campus Thursday, after deputies found a .22-caliber handgun in his waistband, according to the Manatee County Sheriff's Office.

Sammy Nguyen, 17, was arrested about 1 p.m. in a courtyard at Southeast High School.

He faces a charge of possession of a weapon on a school campus, deputies reported.

Dave Bristow, a sheriff's spokesman, said Nguyen told deputies he took the loaded gun to school to show people.

One of the students to whom he showed the gun then told school officials, Bristow said.

A school resource officer arrested Nguyen and took him to the Juvenile Detention Center.

Nguyen told them he purchased the gun "on the street" about three months ago.

Deputies reported the arrest went smoothly and that no one was hurt.

"It was very uneventful for something like that," Bristow said.

Margi Nanney, spokeswoman for the Manatee County School District, said this is a "pre-expulsion event."

"So he'll be taken to a pre-expulsion committee hearing as soon as Monday," Nanney said.

"We consider this one of the most egregious acts that a student can commit. . . . You can be sure we'll immediately pursue it to the fullest extent that we can."
