May 17--UCSB's business writing students were honored Tuesday at the 11th annual Schwartz Family Endowed Awards, a competition for the best-conceived and written student business plans.
Each year, students taking the writing program's course "Writing for Business and Economics" work in groups to prepare 40- to 50-page business plans.
With support from the Specialty Merchandise Corporation, six teams of students were chosen -- from 33 submissions -- as finalists in the competition in which top honors included a cash prize of $1,000.
This year's winners were: First: "Wholly Habanero" by Susan Beresford, Thomas Hicks, Ke (Rocky) Lu, Audrey Maguire and Sara Rodriguez; Second: "Computer Training Wheels" by Michelle Barbeau, Sharon Bocalig, David Madrid, Robert Jacob Thorn, Ket Thao and Hi (Howard) Zhong; Third: "Corner Care" by Melissa Cain, Nina Hoang, Stella Faturos, Monica Truzzolin and Adriana Alegre.
Honorable mentions: "Bipolymer Packaging Corporation" by Ian McJannet, Nahmyo Thoams, Cnih-Yuan Huang, Hsin Yi Chou, Victor Vassilev and Vi Nguyen; "Sports Reel" by Joseph Sorbo, Raymond Kayacan, Jerad Cullen, Daniel Gonzalez, Ryan Lew and Jason Goldstone; "WaitLess Where Dining Means More" by Kate Michels, Adam Mintz, Gil Stuhl, Emile Nahum and Michael Bungo.
This was the second year of an additional prize for advanced business composition, the Guffey Excellence in Business Communication Award, sponsored by renowned textbook author and local resident Mary Ellen Guffey.
The award recognizes other, nonbusiness plan forms of advanced business writing. Ms. Guffey presented two prizes of $250, one for the Advanced Business Communication course, and one for Writing in Marketing.
The winners in the advanced course were Diana Ho and Justin Flam in a tie for first, with a second to Ashley Sanchez. In the writing in marketing course, Christine Tam took first; Diana Ho, second; and Ryan Kinkade third.
After 10 years of commitment to excellence in business communication, the writing program this year received an endowment to fund an event. The founder of the awards, Mark Schwartz of Specialty Merchandise Corporation, has established an endowment that ensures future students will continue to benefit from the awards.
