First Four Teacher Workshops Scheduled In June to Help Schools Lower Water and Energy Use and Help Students Understand Environmental Resource Conservation Subjects
The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) is launching a new water and energy conservation program for middle schools in June to prepare for the summer and next school year. The program will be presented through four workshops to help teachers best present the program and lesson materials.
The new program consists of a 16-page full color student book and a comprehensive 60-page teacher's guide that provides students background and information on water and energy supply sources, environmental technologies, and renewable energy. The program provides students the opportunity to participate first hand in resource conservation by conducting water and energy surveys of their homes and school campuses.
"The new 'Conservation Connection' curriculum program will enable students to participate in our city and statewide efforts to conserve natural resources while also enhancing their academic learning that is consistent with and supports the State standards in science, language arts and math," said LADWP General Manager Ron Deaton.
The development of the lesson package was funded by the California Department of Water Resources, managed by the Central and West Basin Municipal Water Districts, and written by Educational Development Specialists.
The four workshop sessions are as follows: LADWP headquarters building, downtown Los Angeles, Wednesday, June 7, 4-6 p.m.; LAUSD Westside Math, Science and Technology Center, June 7, 4-6 p.m.; LAUSD Van Nuys Math, Science and Technology Center, Monday, June 26, 9-11 a.m.; LAUSD East Los Angeles Math, Science and Technology Center, Tuesday, June 27, 10 a.m.-Noon. Teachers need to attend only one of the sessions to receive the materials for their students. Additional workshops are planned for 2006-2007 school year.
The four workshop sessions are part of the annual 50-part Teacher Workshop Series that LADWP has sponsored for 18 years in partnership with the Los Angeles Unified School District. The workshops cover additional topics such electric safety, water quality and basic electricity (electricity and magnetism).
The workshops are part of the LADWP School Educational Partnership Program that also includes the LADWP Science Bowl high school academic competition, the Adopt-A-School Program involving employees assisting students, the Youth Service Academy for at-risk high school program and the Times in Education newspaper in the classroom program that covers a number of water, energy and environmental subjects for grades 4-12.
