School District Budget Plan Calls for Tax Increase

May 31--CHESTER -- Property taxes for Chester County schools could increase $45 on a $100,000 house if a proposed $39.6 million operating budget for next year is approved.

But Superintendent Barry Campbell hopes the increase can be reduced as administrators work on the budget plan up for approval next month.

The proposed budget, up 9.1 percent from last year, includes a state-mandated salary increase for teachers, school improvements and money for advanced technology, Campbell said. Teachers and other employees will get a minimum 3 percent raise, in line with what they received last year.

Chester County teachers received a similar pay increase last year, he said.

Other proposed budget increases are necessary for maintenance projects and advanced technology, Campbell said.

Some money will be used to improve the cafeteria at Great Falls Middle and for classrooms and libraries to continue to have access to services and technologies at discounted rates, Campbell said.

Last year's operating budget of $36.3 million left a reserve of about $6 million, according to last year's budget report. Auditors expect the district to have about 8 percent to 10 percent of their budgets left over, Campbell said.

The Chester County School District has about 6,200 students and 750 employees, according to its Web site. It has five elementary schools, three middle schools, three high schools, a career center, an adult education center and a new district charter school that will open at the district office in July.

A public hearing about the budget will be 6 p.m. June 14 at the district office. The budget is expected to be approved at the school board meeting on June 19.
