Local Students Show Off Works, Win Scholarships at University Show

Jun. 2--Two students, Caitlin M. Jimenez of South High School and Danielle E. Gallegos of East High School, received $2,000 scholarships at the recent Colorado State University-Pueblo High School Art Show.

Several more local youngsters were honored for their work.

Jimenez and Gallegos will use the money, provided by the Vivian Rich Scholarship Fund, as art majors next fall at the university.

The university hosts the show in its gallery and participation is open to both local school districts.

District 60 has its own awards program for drawings in chalk, charcoal and pastel, ink drawings, pencil drawings, acrylic, watercolor, digital and photography, mixed media and sculpture and pottery.

Roy Sonnema, of the university's art faculty, said that more than 300 entries were submitted from the two districts, nearly covering the gallery walls.

District 60's awards went to the following:

Drawing - chalk/charcoal/pastel: best of show, Greg Nemick from South, for "Horse Eye"; first place/juror's choice, Erek Johnson, Centennial, for "Sand Dunes"; second place/meritorious, Andrew Bueno, East, for "Two Tone"; third place, Anthony McCullough, Central, for "A Piece of Work!"; honorable mention, Andrew Bueno for "Chili Pepper."

Drawing - ink: best of show, Andrew Heedt, South, for "The Assembly of Thought"; first place/juror's choice, Tiffany Williams, East, for "Secrets of the Garden Square"; second place/ meritorious, Michael Gonzales, Central, for "Good & Evil"; honorable mention, Erick Johnson, East, for "Samurai Pointillism."

Drawing - pencil: best of show, Lee Swanson, Centennial, for "Sara"; first place/juror's choice, Kayla Ashley, South,"Escape"; second place/meritorious, Shalah Sedillo, East, for "Old Man and Cro Magnon"; third place to Danielle Gallegos, East, for "Hyang Peck"; honorable mention to Lee Swanson, Centennial, for "Cactus."

Painting - oil acrylic: best of show to Laura Celaya-Gonzales, East, for "2006 HS Art Show Poster"; first place/juror's choice, Mikaelah Cirullo, South, for "Untitled"; second place/meritorious, Patrick Scott, East, for "Icy Hot"; third place, David Caulderson, Centennial for "The City"; honorable mention, Jimenez, South, for "Untitled."

Painting - watercolor: best of show, Gallegos, East, for "Assimilation"; first place/juror's choice, Brent Valdez, Cesar Chavez Academy, for "Sunflower"; second place/meritorious, Kevin Perkins, Central, for "The Legend"; third place, Lashea Lopez, Central, for "WOlfy Whispers"; honorable mention, Monique Vniquez, CCA, for "Sunflower" and Jessica Lucero, South, for "Untitled."
