Jun. 3--The best students at Virginia community colleges are guaranteed admission to the College of William and Mary, under a new transfer agreement.
William and Mary will accept students who graduate with an associate's degree if they have a grade-point average of at least 3.6. All A's is a 4.0 GPA.
The agreement is in effect now, but community college students must write a letter to William and Mary at least one year before they hope to transfer, saying they intend to enroll. That means community college students transferring under the agreement probably won't enter William and Mary until the fall of 2007.
William and Mary is the latest four-year school to sign a transfer agreement with the community colleges. Others include Virginia Tech, the University of Virginia and Virginia Commonwealth University.
A Senate bill passed in the General Assembly this year requires all public four-year universities to make dual enrollment and transfer agreements with the state's community colleges.
Students must have at least 45 credit hours from a Virginia community college before they can transfer to William and Mary.
Earlier this year, Thomas Nelson Community College in Hampton signed an agreement with William and Mary that will guarantee admission for TNCC students starting this fall. That's if they finish their associate's degree with at least a 2.75 GPA and submit a letter of intent to attend William and Mary.
William and Mary has made similar agreements with Tidewater Community College, Rappahannock Community College and Richard Bland College in Petersburg.
The university typically has about 60 students a year who transfer from community colleges, and it has promised the state to enroll 210 a year by 2011.
