Jun. 5--Florida students will soon choose majors and minors in high school, according to a massive education reform bill signed by Gov. Jeb Bush at McFatter Technical High School in Davie today.
The bill, called the A++ Plan for Education, requires students to begin career planning in middle school and increases the number of required core courses students must complete before advancing to high school.
The increased career counseling and majors is aimed at making middle and high school education more relevant to students' lives.
"We recognize that students are not the same, they have different aspirations, different interests," Bush said, calling the bill "the most significant piece of legislation this year, other than the budget."
The bill, which was sponsored by state Rep. Ralph Arza, R-Hialeah, also provides for intensive reading courses for middle and high school students, creates research and career-oriented academies within schools.
K-12 Schools Chancellor Cheri Yecke said "A++ is going to revolutionize what high school looks like."
Under the plan, teachers at low-performing schools and teachers who specialize in high-need subjects such as science, math and special ed, will receive additional pay. The bill also establishes a professional development and leadership program for principals.
