Jun. 6--TOLLAND -- A second public hearing to discuss reconfiguration of grades in the school district will be held Thursday.
Realigning grades is intended to ease crowding at elementary schools and follows the construction of the new high school, which will open this fall.
The meeting will begin at 7 p.m. at Parker Memorial School, 104 Old Post Road.
Turnout at the first public hearing, on Thursday, was sparse, school board member Carolyn Bach said.
Residents who attended that hearing were "interested and concerned," Bach said, but she was surprised by "the lack of a reaction by the community."
School Superintendent William Guzman said the board will determine whether a third public hearing needs to be held after this week's hearing.
Guzman said he hopes the school board's finance and facilities committee will choose one of the three plans being considered and release its decision by the end of this month.
Currently, grades pre-kindergarten through 2 are at Birch Grove Primary, grades 3-4 are at Parker Memorial School, grades 5-8 are at Tolland Middle School and grades 9-12 are at Tolland High School.
The board of education is considering three plans:
Split the town "60-40," and put pre-kindergarten through Grade 3 at Birch Grove, grades K-3 at Parker, grades 4-6 at the middle school and grades 7-8 at the old high school.
Transfer grades 7-8 to the old high school and leave grades 5-6 at the middle school. This plan was initially recommended with the development of the town's new high school. Bach said the plan does little to alleviate crowding at Birch Grove.
Keep pre-kindergarten through Grade 2 at Birch Grove, but transfer two classes to Parker, creating the option of all-day kindergarten.
