Los Angeles Unified School District Doubles Carnegie Learning Bridge to Algebra Implementation; Curricula Adoption Expands After First Semester, As District Continues Raising Math Standards

Posted on: Wednesday, 7 June 2006, 15:00 CDT

Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) has purchased Carnegie Learning's Bridge to Algebra curricula for several thousand additional eighth grade students following an initial implementation of the company's algebra readiness curriculum in the second half of the 2005/2006 school year. This expansion will reach students across all LAUSD middle schools beginning this fall. The value of the contract is $1 million over three-years, and includes Carnegie Learning's Professional Development services for teachers.

Last October, Carnegie Learning received a three-year, multi-million dollar contract from LAUSD to provide Bridge to Algebra and Algebra I curricula to more than 25,000 middle and high school students beginning in January 2006. With the expanded contract, Carnegie Learning will be working to improve math performance for more than 36,000 Los Angeles middle school and high school students this fall.

"We are very pleased with the progress to-date in Los Angeles," said Dennis Ciccone, CEO of Carnegie Learning. "This significant expansion to a greater number of students demonstrates a continued commitment to math education reform in LA. We look forward to working very closely with LAUSD to help students see math positively and to make a connection to its impact on their future opportunities."

Independent studies of Carnegie Learning implementations across the country, including Miami-Dade, Pittsburgh, PA, Moore, OK, and Kent, WA, demonstrate that Carnegie Learning's curricula are proven to deliver a positive shift in standardized test scores, student attitudes toward math and problem solving, and critical thinking skills. Research also indicates strong results with Title I and special-needs populations including Exceptional Student Education students, those with limited English proficiency and students receiving free or reduced lunches.

Carnegie Learning recently announced large curricula implementations in the Chicago Public Schools, Portland Oregon Public Schools, and in schools throughout West Virginia.
