Jun. 9--University of Georgia budget director Timothy P. Burgess will replace Hank Huckaby as senior vice president for finance and administration when Huckaby retires at the end of the month.
UGA President Michael Adams announced the appointment at a news conference Thursday morning.
Burgess, a 1977 UGA graduate, was named UGA budget director in December and has served as commissioner of the state Department of Community Health and head of the state Department of Motor Vehicle Safety.
"I feel I owe this university a great deal," Burgess said Thursday, adding that he owes the success he has earned during his professional life to the firm foundation laid down during his time at UGA. He will use his new position, he said, to pay UGA back for the degree he earned nearly 20 years ago.
The appointment marks the second time Burgess has succeeded Huckaby -- Burgess took over as state budget director in 1995 when Huckaby stepped down. Huckaby joined the university six years ago.
A committee led by Provost Arnett Mace conducted a national search and chose Burgess out of seven candidates.
Burgess was the "overwhelming first choice of the search committee," Adams said.
"In my view, he will be an outstanding senior vice president," Huckaby said. "He understands that role, and I think he's committed to that role." Adams summed up his confidence in Burgess with two words: "experience" and "commitment.""You can hear the ring of commitment in his voice," Adams said.
Adams emphasized that having extensive experience within the state was not a necessary requirement for the position, but that Burgess's in-state experience was a factor in choosing him.
Burgess said the time he's spent at the university over the last several months allowed him to get to know the team he will work with.
"My style is a truly collaborative style," Burgess said. "I don't want the answers to be my answers, I want them to be our answers." Burgess considers finance as one of the biggest challenges the university faces, considering state budget cuts over the past several years.
