Education Update: Eagle to Be New High School’s Mascot

That’s the newly chosen mascot for Folsom’s newest high school. The school colors will be navy blue and silver. Following a selection process that included a survey of more than 400 community members, the final selections were presented to Folsom Cordova Unified School District trustees last week. The new school in eastern Folsom is scheduled to open in the fall of 2007.

An initial survey was presented to Folsom Middle School students, who are in Vista del Lago’s attendance area. The students narrowed the mascot choices to wildcats, eagles and panthers. The color preferences were navy blue and silver, navy blue and orange, maroon and gold, and light blue and silver.

Youth camp offered The Folsom Lake College Students in Free Enterprise team will hold a weeklong “Biz” Kids Youth Camp from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 19 to 23 at the college campus, 100 Scholar Way.

The camp is designed to team seventh- through 10th-grade students in entrepreneurship, teamwork, communications and business. A $75 fee per student covers instruction, class materials, camp prizes, tours, snacks and an awards ceremony. The camp, described as a local version of “The Apprentice,” includes hands-on activities using Folsom Lake College computer lab and digital video cameras, guest speakers and a tour of the campus.

Juneteenth celebration set A Juneteenth celebration will be held from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday in Folsom’s downtown historic district.

The event, sponsored by the Black Farmers and Agriculturalists Association, will feature exhibits in the Folsom history interpretive area. Juneteenth — or June 19, 1865 — is considered the date when the last slaves in the United States were freed. Although rumors of freedom were widespread prior to that date, emancipation didn’t occur until Gen. Gordon Granger rode into Galveston, Texas, and issued a federal order almost 2 1/2 years after Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation.
