School Districts to Push for Summit County Sales Tax Hike

By Katie Byard, The Akron Beacon Journal, Ohio

Jun. 12--Area school district superintendents are seeking a quarter-cent increase in the county sales tax.

The Akron Area School Superintendents' Association said in a statement that a "strong majority" of County Council members are in favor of putting the issue before voters countywide on the Nov. 7 ballot.

The association canceled a news conference -- set for 4 p.m. today -- at which members planned to discuss the proposal.

Edwin Holland, superintendent of Cuyahoga Falls schools, said this afternoon that the news conference probably would be rescheduled for June 19.

If approved by voters, the measure would increase the sales and use tax in Summit County from 6.25 cents on the dollar to 6.50 cents for 25 years.

Money generated by the increase would be distributed to the county's 17 school districts for permanent improvement projects, including construction of new school buildings.

The proposal comes as County Council members are considering a proposed quarter-cent increase in the county's sales tax to subsidize criminal justice programs.
