Community School Students Capture High School Diplomas: Parents Look on As 41 Students Graduate From County's Five Community Programs

Jun. 13--Truancy and even expulsion may have plagued the high school careers of a small group of students who gathered in front of their parents at the Jack House in San Luis Obispo, but they gathered as successful graduates Monday.

Diplomas were given to 41 students who attend the five San Luis Obispo County Community Schools in a special commencement exercise.

An additional 11 received certificates of achievement, which go to students who have finished all necessary credits but haven't passed the California High School Exit Exam.

The small community schools are run by the San Luis Obispo County Office of Education in Arroyo Grande, Atascadero, Morro Bay, Nipomo and San Luis Obispo.

The students who attend often have extreme truancy issues, or have been expelled from other districts.
