Boise District Considers Four-Year High, Middle Schools

Jun. 17--Boise School District will monitor its student enrollment decline before making a decision on whether to create four-year high schools and middle schools. District officials said enrollment projections indicate that it could lose 17 percent of its secondary students in the next decade.

The drop could leave many of its high schools and junior high with such low numbers that programs could suffer ("Boise district eyes sending 9th-graders to high school," May 30).

Creating four-year high schools and middle schools with sixth through eighth grades would keep schools at the size they are now or slightly larger. But the district could have to spend an estimated $5 million to $8 million refurbishing schools to make room for students or meet their academic needs, especially in science. Renovation costs will likely be the key issue to making the transformation, said Don Coberly, district curriculum director.
