Queen's Grant Charter to Add High School Program: 9th Grade Will Start This Year, With Remaining Grades Coming Next Year

Jun. 18--One of Mecklenburg County's most popular charter schools is expanding next school year by launching a high school program.

Queen's Grant Community Charter School in Mint Hill will add a ninth grade for the 2006-2007 academic year, then will add 10th through 12th grades the following year.

Queen's Grant, which opened in 2002, has 720 students in its current K-8-grade format and has a waiting list at many grade levels.

Teresa Statile, the school's Parent Ambassador, said meetings are being held on Thursday evenings this month to inform the public about the new high school. Statile said enrollment for next year's ninth grade will be capped at 125 students, and a lottery will be used if more than 125 students apply.

Students who recently finished eighth grade at the school automatically will receive spots in the new ninth grade, provided the school is notified by Tuesday. In addition, students who have siblings enrolled at Queen's Grant will receive preference for available spots at the school.

As a public charter school, Queen's Grant does not charge tuition and is open to anyone living in North Carolina.

Students are required to wear uniforms in grades K-8, but Statile said high school students will not face that requirement, although she said "appropriate attire" must be worn.

As is the case at the middle-school level, the high school will offer extracurricular activities, including interscholastic sports. Academic courses already planned for ninth grade are English, World History, Environmental Science, Algebra I, Algebra II, Geometry, physical education, and Spanish I. Advanced Placement and Honors level courses will be added as needed.

Applications for the high school are available in the school office, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekdays.

Information meetings are scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday and June 29.

Queen's Grant Community Charter School is at 6400 Matthews-Mint Hill Road. Details: 704-573-6611.
