Edward Cavin Named St. Andrew's Academy Head of School
Posted on: Tuesday, 20 June 2006, 15:00 CDT
Edward P. Cavin, a proven school leader with a reputation for enrollment growth and student achievement, has been named Head of School at St. Andrew's Academy in Mahtomedi, Minn., school officials announced.
Cavin, a native Minnesotan with a Master's Degree in School Administration from the University of St. Thomas and a Bachelor's Degree in Architecture from Harvard, has more than 35 years experience in education, including Head of School at both Trinity Episcopal School in New Orleans, Louisiana, and St. Croix Academy in West Lakeland, Minnesota.
"I believe that exemplary schools are attentive to the needs of the whole child," stated Cavin. "In addition to academics, issues of personal conduct, values, and a spiritual dimension are highly considered, and that has me very excited about the future of St. Andrew's Academy."
Cavin began his education career in 1970 at Breck School, an Episcopal school in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where he served eight years, first as a Science Teacher, then Director of Admissions, and finally Middle School Director. His most recent experience is in the classroom as a fifth-grade teacher at the Minneapolis Jewish Day School, where he has taught since 2004. His resume also includes the Director of Planning at Norwood School in Bethesda, Maryland; and an Elementary Principal at Randolph Public Schools in Randolph, Minnesota.
He has broad national experience, including service as Board Member on the Elementary School Heads Association (ESHA) and Southwest Association of Episcopal Schools (SAES); Triennial Conference Chairman of the National Association of Episcopal Schools (NAES); Member, Elementary Schools Standards Committee, Independent Schools Association of the Southwest (ISAS); and Committee Member and Chair for regional accreditation visitations for the Independent Schools Association of the Central States (ISACS) and ISAS.
"Children really are our future hope -- we will do as well as they do, and the elementary years are so very important," Cavin said. "Elementary students are filled with an excitement and curiosity about learning that can carry them into the upper grades with a healthy attitude and good momentum. This age is as much about the joy of learning as it is about acquiring basic skills."
