Elementary Students Take Summer Detour ... To College

Jun. 23--Elementary students in Austin will have the chance to attend college this summer.
A collaboration between Riverland Community College and Community Education will offer the weeklong Kids College in July.
The program, aimed at students entering grades four, five or six in the fall, will run at the Austin and Albert Lea Riverland campuses.
Classes in Austin will be from 8:30 a.m. to noon July 31 through Aug. 4. Albert Lea classes will run from July 24 to July 28.
The classes are designed to encourage creativity and develop thinking and problem-solving skills. Students will participate in two classes. A minimum of 10 students must enroll before a course can be offered.
Classes in Austin include Your Animal World; Play-Fun with Susan Vee; French Language and Culture; Math through Art and Games; Clay for Kids; Introduction to Electronics; and Introduction to Robotics.
Class options in Albert Lea include Movin'& Groovin'; Math through Art and Games; Write Your Own Picture Book; Theatre Camp; Nature, Animals & Art; Cartooning Basics; Puzzling Geometry; Art through the Eyes of an Artist; and Animation Station.
Tuition is $75 per child for the week. Scholarships are available.
Organizers are also looking for volunteer leaders. Adult leaders may deduct $5 from the tuition fee for each day of volunteering.
