Jun. 26--STOCKTON -- Professors at San Joaquin Delta College have named four of their peers as distinguished faculty for this year.
The winners are Mel Simmons, Martha Villareal, Lynn Welch and Narcisa Ann Tuliao.
Simmons teaches computer science. He was singled out for always being willing to give students as much help as they need and for donating his services to the community, building computers for students, faculty, community groups or his church free of charge.
Villareal, a business professor, teaches single-credit vocational courses to help entice students to earn business degrees or certificates. She also has been a long-time member of the Small Business Development Center's advisory board and has established partnerships between Delta and several community groups.
Welch coordinates the Professional Development Center and has chaired the Academic Senate's curriculum committee. She established a functional, sophisticated online curriculum system that has been studied by other colleges around the state.
Tuliao splits her time teaching English as a second language between Delta and the Stockton Unified School District. She began as an adjunct professor with Delta in 1981, teaching ESL and basic writing, mostly at the college's Rio Vista campus. Many of her students returned year after year, and some would bring her fresh vegetables they picked themselves in appreciation for her help.
