Experts Available to Discuss Majority of U.S. States Do Not Meet Federal Approval on Student Testing

Posted on: Monday, 10 July 2006, 18:00 CDT

ExpertSource:

TOPIC: Student testing in 34 U.S. states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico is not meeting federal approval, according to an article by The Associated Press. All risk losing from $40,000 to more than $1 million to be used to administer the No Child Left Behind law. The law requires that states test students in the third- to eighth-grade in math and reading. Students are also tested once in high school. Although all the states conducted the required testing, many states fell short in creating exams for disabled students or students with limited English.

EXPERTS: ExpertSource can offer several highly qualified experts to comment on this story:

Kathy Daly is an expert trainer and educator in the Step Up To Writing Curriculum designed to teach teachers to more effectively teach writing in the classroom. As a 20-year educator, Ms. Daly's company is in the business of showing teachers and administrators how to effectively change the mindset about teaching writing skills so that all teachers incorporate strategies to teach writing -- and not just the English teacher. The training is perfect for public school districts, and home-schoolers. The program addresses all goals on the Florida Improvement program for the FCAT and the No Child Left Behind law. The training is being used and implemented around the country. School districts show incredible improvements when teachers use these strategies.

Garrard McClendon can discuss the following areas, No Child Left Behind, charter schools and technology in schools. McClendon is a writer, diversity trainer, and talk show host. He wrote Ax or Ask?: The African American Guide to Better English to help Blacks with school achievement. Currently, he is completing his Ph.D. at Loyola University.

Steve Peha, president of Teaching That Makes Sense, Inc., is well-qualified to provide insightful commentary and thoughtful opinions on the state of education in America, including teacher quality and retention, best-practice instruction, testing and No Child Left Behind. He's taught thousands of kids and hundreds of teachers in the United States and Canada. An avid researcher, he also can speak authoritatively on current best practices, how kids learn and what teaching methods are truly effective. His in-school work with teachers and kids, real-world orientation from his years as an entrepreneur, and in-depth investigation of education issues and current research enable him to offer an informed and unique perspective on what we're doing right -- and wrong -- in education in America. Peha's straightforward views undercut the prevailing wisdom and get right to the heart of what matters. He is the author of "Be A Writer: Your Guide to the Writing Life," a book for 12- to 18-year-old kids and their parents.
