BLAIRSVILLE, Pa., July 31 /PRNewswire/ -- Apangea Learning, an educational support company that provides cost-effective differentiated instruction, today announced that the North Kenwood/Oakland (NKO) Charter School has adopted SmartHelp. NKO, a charter school run by the University of Chicago Center for Urban School Improvement (USI), will use SmartHelp in its middle school, starting this summer with a pilot followed by a full rollout this September. SmartHelp is the only system that has been shown to dramatically improve achievement at a cost of just $1-2 per tutoring hour.
"We're proud that schools making a concerted effort to reach urban youth are recognizing the value that SmartHelp brings to the table," Louis Piconi, Apangea Learning CEO, said. "NKO has successfully achieved Adequate Yearly Progress under the No Child Left Behind Act. But it wants even more for its students; it wants them to excel. It is the school's commitment to skills-based instruction that has helped it to be so successful -- and the adoption of SmartHelp will surely raise the bar higher."
The 420-student, pre-K to grade 8, NKO student body is almost 100 percent African American, with 65 percent of students on a free and reduced lunch program. Student families must apply through a lottery system to this innovative school. Technology is a central part of the NKO one-to-one curriculum -- all students have email accounts and all middle school students have a laptop. During after-school hours, NKO expects that the 70 percent of students who have home Internet access will use SmartHelp at home, with the remainder using the library and after-school computer clusters.
"We evaluated a number of math programs to improve our students' achievement," said Laura Walsh Giesecke, Technology Integration Coach of NKO. "The Flash animation, personalized avatars and use of audio make a huge difference in helping students learn math -- and the live tutors push the model even further for a truly compelling program."
SmartHelp is the only system with an artificial intelligence engine providing support to students until the moment they are in need of a live tutor -- at which point SmartHelp makes available a live certified teacher over the Internet. The system can be used anytime; live tutors are available 8 a.m.-9 p.m. Monday-Friday and 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Saturday.
